About

In October 2018, LNG Canada made a final investment decision to build its liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility in Kitimat, British Columbia, Canada. The project represents the largest energy investment in Canadian history.

The LNG export facility will liquefy surplus Canadian natural gas so it can be safely exported to help meet global energy demands. Fluor’s joint venture partnership with JGC Corporation will provide engineering, procurement, fabrication and construction for the project.

Gitga’at Waiward Scope of Work

Gitga’at Waiward was awarded the contract in 2020. We performed the following:

  • Supply of 8,000+ MT of structural and miscellaneous steel
  • Connection design, engineering, and detailing of steel fabrication and erection drawings via 3D model transfer with the Engineer of Record
  • Fabrication of stick built and miscellaneous structural steel
  • Pre-assembly of miscellaneous supports as well as rectangular and radial platforms
  • Coating of all structural and miscellaneous steel
  • Management and coordination of grating, fireproofing, and coating subcontractors

Creating Solutions

Project is utilizing a 3D model transfer process which eliminates the use of traditional paper IFC drawings. Model transfer process facilitated the ability to timely and accurately order material by eliminating the need to model steel from 2D drawings to obtain quantities. Additionally it provided a collaborative multidisciplinary environment which resulted in the optimization of connection design, a reduction in drawings comments at rework at approved as well as the ability to efficiently identify and implement change.

Through a collaborative review with the client construction team we identified small support structures and platforms ideal for shop pre-assembly to reduce field handling and increase erection efficiency leading to cost savings.

As part of shipping processes Waiward implemented the project RFID tagging system resulting in increased accuracy of shipments as well as increased efficiency in receiving and locating pieces at site.
