Celebrating the Recognition as Named One of Canada’s Best Managed Companies

March 05, 2020

Toronto,ON –March 5,2020 – Waiward Industrial LP was recognized for overall business performance and sustained growth with the prestigious Canada’s Best Managed Companies designation. The 2020 Best Managed program award winners are amongst the best-in-class of Canadian owned and managed companies with revenues over $25 million demonstrating investment in talent and technology, innovation in a competitive environment, and an increased focus on global competition. Now in its 27th year, Canada’s Best Managed Companies remains one of the country’s leading business awards programs recognizing Canadian-owned and managed companies for innovative, world-class business practices. Every year, hundreds of entrepreneurial companies compete for this designation in a rigorous and independent process that evaluates the caliber of their management abilities and practices.

Waiward has stable yet progressive growth orientated business practices and this award recognizes the tremendous commitment and hard work of our entire team.

“We are very proud to receive this prestigious designation. This award recognizes our commitment to our customers and to each other. I’m very appreciative and humbled by our team who have been through some difficult change and are recognized for their collective contribution. I’m confident we will continue to excel in the future.” states Andy Brooks, President and CEO of Waiward Industrial LP.

Applicants are evaluated by an independent judging panel comprised of representatives from program sponsors in addition to special guest judges. 2020 Best Managed companies share commonalities that include (but are not limited to) a clear and concise strategy, capability to invest in R&D, tools and proprietary equipment, and a strong emphasis on corporate social responsibility.

“While Canada’s Best Managed Companies recognize uncertainty on the economic horizon, their focus hasn’t wavered and they haven’t been discouraged; they are relentlessly focused on growing their business to new heights and investing in the future,” said Kari Lockhart, Partner, Deloitte Private and Co-Leader, Canada’s Best Managed Companies program. “The contribution these companies provide to Canada cannot be overstated. Every year, Best Managed winners are raising the bar of excellence in Canadian business.”

Waiward Industrial LP is a 2020 recipient of the Canada’s Best Managed Companies Platinum Club designation, having retained its Best Managed designation for more than seven consecutive years.

November 12, 2019

Here at Waiward we’re very excited to announce a new partnership with the First Nation of Gitga’at.

From the beginning of time, the Gitga’at people have existed, and thrived, in their Territory on what is now British Columbia’s northwest coast. The Gitga’at Nation, whose name means “People of the Cane,” is a part of the larger Tsimshian Nation group that occupies much of the Northern coast of BC which includes the communities of Prince Rupert, Terrace, and Kitimat.

The wellbeing of the Gitga’at people is intricately related to the health of their lands, waters, and resources and the community continues to care for the abundance and richness of their Territory in their role as stewards of the land as they always have.

The Gitga’at Waiward joint venture partnership represents what can be achieved when the Indigenous values of territorial sustainability and community wellbeing align with a company known for integrity, hard work, and a commitment to excellence.

Our partnership was officially formalized on November 12, 2019 and will operate as Gitga’at Waiward Industrial Ltd.

CISC Steel Edge Award

CISC Steel Edge Award

May 3, 2019

We are very pleased to be a recipient of the CISC Steel Edge Award for the Stanley A. Milner Library Renewal.  The Stanley A. Milner Library, located in the heart of downtown Edmonton across from Churchill Square, originally opened in 1967 and in 2014, City Council approved funding for a top to bottom revitalization and renewal project of the 50 year old structure.

Innovative uses of structural steel to support the dramatically contoured facade were achieved through a creative system of trusses.  Other steel highlights included a slender reading ramp that wraps around the open atrium space, and the design and installation of a steel cross brace lateral system within the existing concrete structure.

Creating Solutions

Inconsistent/outdated information relating to existing concrete/rebar. Waiward was able to mitigate these challenges by self preforming the increased coring work, which helped reduce overall costs.

Through inhouse engineering, Waiward devised a safe and ingenuitive means of safely erecting the unique skeletal structure on the façade of the library. Use of false work, as well as temp support rigging, allowed this very intricate series of erection activities to be executed in a safe and efficient manner.

The Stanley Milner Library is situated in the heart of downtown Edmonton, which led to the anticipated logistical challenges of receiving/handling construction material. Waiward navigated through these challenges by maintaining a streamed lined conduit of communication with our shop, to ensure that materials were fabricated and delivered as needed, minimizing the risk of bottlenecking at the work location. Specific to the installation of the frontage support steel, extra consideration had to be made for underground utilities, with regards to crane placement as well as truss pre-assemblies.
